SAHAS IAS ACADEMY

GS FOUNDATION — RECOMMENDED BOOK LIST

READ LESS. READ RIGHT. REVISE OFTEN.
4GS Papers
17Subject Areas
35Books and Resources
3Revision Rounds

UPSC preparation does not need an unlimited reading list. It needs the right few sources, read repeatedly.

This list is organised by GS paper. Books marked Core are the main sources to complete and revise. Books marked Reference are for deeper reading or specific doubts. Do not try to finish every reference book.

How to Use This List

  1. Start with NCERTs to build basic concepts in each subject.
  2. Move to the Core book for each subject and read it with SAHAS class notes.
  3. Link current affairs to every topic, using the daily newspaper and SAHAS Daily Current Affairs.
  4. Solve PYQs after each topic to see how UPSC asks questions.
  5. Revise the same Core books at least three times instead of adding new ones.

SAHAS Study Material

Along with the books above, students of the GS Foundation Programme receive structured resources designed for revision:

  • Class Notes and Topic-wise Notes
  • Current Affairs Material (daily, monthly and revision-based)
  • PYQ-based Resources
  • Revision Sheets
  • Prelims Practice Questions
  • Mains Value-Addition Material
  • Test Papers and Answer-Writing Frameworks

THE GOAL IS NOT MORE MATERIAL.

THE GOAL IS TO MAKE THE RIGHT MATERIAL EASIER TO REVISE.

Reading Strategy

Do

  • Use one Core book per subject.
  • Make short notes while reading.
  • Revise Core books again and again.
  • Always use the latest edition for polity, economy and current affairs.
  • Practise PYQs along with every topic.

Avoid

  • Buying several books for the same topic.
  • Collecting PDFs without reading them.
  • Reading Reference books before finishing Core books.
  • Postponing current affairs and answer writing.
  • Changing sources again and again.
Note: This is a recommended list for guidance. Editions and syllabus keep changing, so confirm the latest edition and any changes with your SAHAS mentor before buying books.
